Christmas Advent: Day 13

by Church Staff on December 13, 2023

DCEMEBER 13

When we interrupt our day to be still with the Lord for a couple of moments we can be renewed by Immanuel and His love for us. Our Advent Devotional is an invitation to quietly settle ourselves so we may know more of His presence with us. Find a quiet space to reflect on the theme and verses of the day. Spend as much time as you are able and be refreshed as you trust His presence with you today.

Immanuel: God with Us in the Child

This week, we look at the names given for Jesus in the prophecy of His birth found in Isaiah 9:6-7. The names reveal the way God gives Himself to us through His son, this child, Jesus.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV)

DAY 13 FOCUS

God with me as Everlasting Father

Thinking of Jesus the Son as an Everlasting Father can seem contradictory. Pastor Sam Storms says: “Concerning the language of “Everlasting Father,” it is “a descriptive analogy pointing to Christ’s character . . . he is fatherly, father-like, in his treatment of us.”

And Charles Spurgeon said “There is no unfathering Christ, and there is no unchilding us,” “He is everlastingly a father to those who trust in him.”

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. (Psalm 68:5 NIV)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV)
