You know, living out your faith with others can feel tricky sometimes. We all come from different places and have our own stories, but that’s also what makes it so meaningful. So, how do we do this in a way that’s real and honors God? Here’s what I’ve been learning.
Lead with Love
First, everything starts with love. Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). That means loving people for who they are, not as a project or someone to fix. It’s about seeing them as made in God’s image, respecting their journey, and treating them with kindness and patience. Real love is the foundation.
Be Curious, Kind, and Patient
I’ve found it so important to be genuinely curious about people’s stories. Ask questions. Listen. Don’t rush to share your perspective before really hearing theirs. When someone opens up, respond with kindness and patience. Paul’s advice in Colossians 4:6 always sticks with me: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Grace first, always.
Avoid the Need to "Win"
This one’s huge. It’s easy to feel like we need to convince people to believe exactly what we believe or follow our specific version of Christianity. But Carl Medearis, in Speaking of Jesus, said it so well: “When we’re trying to win, we’re usually focused on ourselves—our beliefs, our arguments, our success. Jesus doesn’t call us to win; He calls us to love.” That’s a big perspective shift, right? Instead of trying to win, we can focus on reflecting Christ’s love and letting God handle the rest.
Point Them to Jesus
When the time feels right, gently point others to Jesus. This isn’t about forcing conversations or preaching. It’s about living in a way that reflects His compassion, humility, and grace. Share your story authentically when it fits the moment. Sometimes, just the way you live your life can point people to Him.
Live Out the Fruit of the Spirit
Honestly, people notice how we live more than what we say. Galatians 5:22-23 talks about the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When these qualities show up in your interactions, it’s a powerful testimony of what Jesus is doing in your life.
Trust God with the Results
Here’s the freeing part: It’s not on us to change people. That’s God’s job. Whether someone comes to faith, grows spiritually, or just feels genuinely loved and valued because of how we treat them, that’s success. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God is working all things for good—we just need to be faithful and trust Him with the outcomes.
Start with love, stay curious, and let your life reflect Jesus.
So, how can you live out your faith with others? Start with love, stay curious, and let your life reflect Jesus. Don’t worry about having all the answers or getting it perfect. Just show up, be authentic, and trust God to work through you. That’s where the beauty of living out your faith really shines.
