How Can We Know God Exists?

In my early twenties, I was an agnostic. I was not angry at God or wrestling with Him; I did not have the time or concern for the question. Life was full. I was married, already had a child, and was trying to carve out a future through university. I was not the typical college student, since I had more life experience and responsibility than most of those sitting in the classroom.

One of my college classes was Geology. I will never forget the day the topic turned to earth history and the professor launched into a passionate lecture against belief in God. He ridiculed people of faith and dismissed the very idea of God as foolish. I sat there listening, and while I was not a believer, something in me pushed back. I realized he was speaking with more hostility than evidence. In fact, he offered no empirical evidence at all.

If something as significant as God’s existence could be brushed off so quickly, I needed to know for myself.

What troubled me even more was the reaction of the younger students around me. They soaked up every word with excitement. They did not question it. They did not push back. They just nodded along as if the case was already closed. My mind could not rest with that. If something as significant as God’s existence could be brushed off so quickly, I needed to know for myself.

That moment became the spark for my journey. I began to ask, Is there really a God, and can a person have enough confidence in His existence to make a faith decision that is not blind but reasonable?

As I searched, I came across several truths that gave me a foundation for faith. Looking back, these were the main stepping stones.

First, the universe has a beginning. Everything that begins must have a cause. The universe has not always been here. Science itself points to a beginning, which implies a Beginner.

Second, the design of life is overwhelming. The balance that makes life possible, the complexity of DNA, and the placement of the earth in just the correct position to sustain life all point to a Designer. Chance seemed like the least reasonable explanation.

Third, our moral compass runs deep. No matter the culture, there is a sense of right and wrong that goes beyond survival or opinion. That moral law points to a moral Lawgiver.

Fourth, history turns on Jesus. I could not get past the reality of His life, death, and resurrection. The explosion of the early church demanded an explanation, and the claim that God raised Him from the dead was the only one that carried real historical weight. At that stage, I was not ready to believe, but I could not ignore the strength of the evidence.

These were not just abstract ideas. They were solid enough to move me from indifference to conviction. Eventually, I put my trust in God through Jesus Christ. From that day forward, I have known a peace in my soul that I had never experienced before.

The Bible affirms what I discovered. Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Psalm 19:1 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” The evidence is all around us.

But knowing God exists is more than agreeing with an argument. It is about a relationship. James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” I found that to be true. When I took the step of trust, He met me with love, forgiveness, and a sense of purpose that has carried me ever since.

So let me invite you. Do not just ask if God exists. Invite Him into your journey. You can be confident He is real, and even more, you can be comforted by the truth that He loves you.
