Sharing Jesus in a Way that Connects

One of the most critical questions a follower of Jesus can ask is this: How do I share Jesus with others in a way that genuinely connects?

This question comes from the right heart. As disciples, we long for others to know Jesus as we do, because Scripture tells us that He is the only way to God and that salvation is found in Him alone. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Since the stakes are eternal, we must share Jesus in ways that are both faithful to the gospel and meaningful to those listening.

There is one language, however, that connects with everyone—Love.

In premarital counseling, I often teach that communication requires both a speaker and a listener. The message must not only be spoken but also received. Sharing Jesus works the same way. People differ in personalities, experiences, and worldviews. If our goal is to help someone understand the hope we have in Christ, then we must learn to “speak their language.” This doesn’t mean changing the gospel but presenting it in a way that connects with their life and experiences.

There is one language, however, that connects with everyone—Love. Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). Love opens doors that arguments often close. Love means listening before speaking, caring for the whole person, and showing the patience and kindness of Christ. When you approach people with Love, you embody the gospel you want to share.

It’s often said that actions speak louder than words. Most people will notice Jesus in how you live before they invite you to talk about Him. Jesus taught, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Your kindness, integrity, and forgiveness can spark curiosity and open hearts. When your life reflects Christ, your words carry credibility and power.

Another key is understanding a person’s story. Everyone carries experiences, doubts, and struggles that shape how they see God. Some wrestle with pain or disappointment, while others question intellectually or culturally. If we want to connect, we must listen long enough to learn their barriers and needs. Paul modeled this in Athens: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious… I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you” (Acts 17:22–23). He started with common ground and pointed to Christ.

Our role is not to impress but to faithfully point to Jesus. That means speaking plainly—avoiding jargon, telling stories, and sharing personal testimony. Keep the focus on who Jesus is and what He has done. Above all, rely on the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised, “When the Advocate comes… he will testify about me” (John 15:26). The Spirit opens hearts; we simply share with Love and clarity.

To share Jesus in a way that connects, we must combine truth with Love, clarity with compassion, and boldness with humility. We must understand another person’s language and story, while letting our actions testify before our words. When we do this, we can trust that the message of Christ will not only be spoken but received, and lives will be transformed.
