Salt & Light

Series: The Best Life

Summary

Pastor Nick Steinloski reflects on Jesus’ words in **Matthew 5:13–16**, where Jesus calls His followers the **salt of the earth** and the **light of the world**. He explains that many people think the best life is about success, visibility, and influence, but Jesus presents an “upside-down kingdom” where identity in Him comes first. Instead of striving to earn God’s approval, believers are reminded that Jesus declares **“you are”** salt and light—meaning their identity is already established because they belong to Him. The speaker shares a personal story about being adopted to illustrate how God invites people into His family and gives them a new identity before any performance or effort. From that place of belonging, believers are then **sent into the world** to influence it, just as salt preserves and light shines in darkness. Christians are not meant to withdraw from culture or blend into it completely, but to live faithfully within it, bringing love, grace, and hope. Jesus’ call to shine is not about drawing attention to ourselves but about doing “beautiful works” that point others to God. Ultimately, the purpose of being salt and light is that people would see these good works and **glorify God**, not the individual. The message concludes with three responses: rest in your belonging in Christ, faithfully show up where God has placed you, and redirect all glory back to God.
