Understanding the Law

Series: The Best Life

Summary

Pastor Nick Steniloski introduces a message from **Matthew 5:17–20**, explaining that Jesus did not come to abolish the Old Testament law but to fulfill it. He notes that people often react to the idea of “law” in two extremes: rejecting it as restrictive or trying to perfectly perform it through strict rule-keeping. Instead, Jesus teaches that the best life is found by trusting in Him—the one who fulfills the law—rather than rebelling against it or trying to manage behavior through rules. The law reveals God’s character and exposes human sin like a mirror, but it cannot remove sin; only Jesus can do that through His mercy and sacrifice.

The sermon highlights four lessons: Jesus **fulfills**, **filters**, **clarifies**, and **transforms** the law. Jesus fulfills the law by completing its purpose and taking on its consequences, offering mercy while still upholding justice. He filters the law by showing that some Old Testament practices (such as temple rituals and sacrifices) pointed forward to Him and are completed in His work. Jesus also clarifies that the law was always about the **heart**, not just outward obedience—addressing issues like anger, lust, and pride rather than only external actions. Finally, He transforms believers from the inside out, producing true righteousness that goes beyond religious performance.

The message concludes that the righteousness Jesus calls for is not achieved by stricter rule-keeping but received through trust and relationship with Him. Instead of trying to earn approval through behavior, believers are invited to surrender to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to transform their hearts. When people trust Christ, the law is no longer a crushing burden but becomes an expression of God’s love flowing through their lives.
