God's View of Dishonesty & Hypocrisy

March 30, 2025 | Damian Thompson

Passage: Acts 5:1-11

Pastor Damian introduces the message as part of the ongoing "Rise" series, specifically focusing on "Transforming Our City." He sets the stage by reflecting on the generosity displayed in Acts 4, where believers sold possessions to support those in need, highlighting Barnabas as an example of selflessness. However, he quickly transitions to Acts 5, where a stark contrast emerges with Ananias and Sapphira, who deceitfully withhold part of their offering while pretending to give it all. Peter confronts their dishonesty, and both Ananias and Sapphira fall dead, sending shockwaves through the early church. The severity of their punishment underscores the importance of integrity and the fear of God within the faith community. Damian emphasizes that while the passage is unsettling, it holds valuable lessons for believers today. He acknowledges that discomfort while reading it is natural but insists that it is meant for learning and reflection. The dramatic contrast between Barnabas’ generosity and Ananias and Sapphira’s deception highlights the dangers of hypocrisy. Through this story, the church is reminded of the significance of honesty and wholehearted devotion to God.
