Perplexed by Jesus

Series: Rise

April 06, 2025 | Scott Harris

Passage: Acts 5:12-42

In this message, Scott Harris, Lead Pastor, continues a series called Rise, focusing on Acts 5:12–42 and the early church's powerful impact on culture. The central theme is "perplexing people," drawn from verse 24, where religious leaders are baffled by the apostles' actions. The word "perplexed" is explored deeply—meaning confused, amazed, or mind-blown—illustrating how the early church, through signs and wonders, caused people to respond in varying ways. Some were drawn in awe, others fearful, and some completely committed to following Jesus.

Pastor Scott uses personal anecdotes and examples—like old photo development and quantum entanglement—to show how God's creation and power can baffle and inspire. He highlights how the apostles, especially Peter, demonstrated the power of Jesus so tangibly that people hoped even Peter's shadow could heal. This reflects a hunger for something real, something supernatural.

Modern examples, like a thrift store volunteer’s encounter or a healing prayer request, show that this power is still alive today and continues to perplex and attract people. The message challenges listeners to reflect on whether the power of Jesus in their lives draws others in. Is Jesus more than just a belief system—does He live powerfully through you in a way that causes others to wonder and want more?
