The Church Takes Shape

Series: Rise

February 16, 2025 | Scott Harris

Passage: Acts 2:42-47

The message focuses on the rise of the church, as seen in the book of Acts, often referred to as the Acts of the Holy Spirit or the Acts of the Apostles. The church began with the coming of the Holy Spirit, described as a mighty rushing wind that filled the upper room where 120 believers were gathered. This moment marked the birth of the church, a powerful and beautiful movement of God. The speaker compares this to a lifelong fascination with tornadoes—both powerful and awe-inspiring forces. Acts chapter 2 describes how the early church took shape, devoted to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. The believers shared everything, cared for each other, and lived in unity, leading to daily growth in their numbers. The church is referred to as the bride of Christ, a centerpiece of God’s plan, much like how a bride is the focal point of a wedding. The early church was built on the teachings of Jesus, as recorded in the Scriptures, which remain the foundation of faith today. The message challenges believers to not only know the Scriptures but to live them out, embodying the mission of the church.
