Passage: Acts 16:16-40
Pastor Damian opened his message in Acts 16, focusing on one of Scripture’s more unique stories. Paul and Silas, on their way to pray, encountered a slave girl possessed by a spirit that enabled her to tell fortunes, bringing profit to her owners. Though the girl’s words about Paul and Silas were true, her constant proclamations were intrusive and relentless, leading Paul to cast the spirit out in Jesus’ name. While this freed the girl, it enraged her owners, who realized their financial gain was gone. They seized Paul and Silas, falsely accused them, and dragged them before the magistrates in Philippi. The charges highlighted their Jewish identity and twisted the truth, using prejudice and misrepresentation to justify punishment. The community joined in hostility, leading to Paul and Silas being stripped, beaten, and imprisoned. Damian emphasized how greed, injustice, and manipulation led to suffering, but also how disruption opened the way for freedom. He also connected this suffering to God’s earlier words to Ananias in Acts 9, where Paul was told he would endure much for the sake of Christ’s name. This raised the question of whether Paul knew from the beginning the cost of his calling.
